1. Purpose
This policy sets out Murzo Group's approach to human remains, sacred objects, funerary items, ancestral objects, ritual objects, culturally sensitive material, repatriation claims, restitution requests, and related ethical decisions.
The purpose is to ensure such material is treated with dignity, legality, cultural sensitivity, transparency, and appropriate specialist oversight.
2. Scope
This policy applies where Murzo Group encounters, is offered, stores, transports, researches, photographs, displays, purchases, sells, loans, values, insures, imports, exports, disposes of, or receives claims relating to human remains, sacred objects, funerary items, ancestral material, or sensitive cultural objects.
It applies to cultural property, antiques, archaeological material, museum-like collections, private collections, property clearance, estate assets, artworks, tribal or indigenous objects, religious objects, archival records, and items associated with burial, ritual, mourning, worship, conflict, colonial removal, or community identity.
3. Dignity & Ethical Position
Murzo Group will treat human remains and sacred or sensitive cultural material as ethically distinct from ordinary property.
Commercial interest, aesthetic value, collection value, or curiosity must not override dignity, lawful custody, cultural sensitivity, community interest, source-country law, religious significance, or repatriation concerns.
4. Prohibition on Unapproved Handling
Murzo Group must not knowingly buy, sell, advertise, import, export, display, photograph, transfer, clean, restore, sample, test, or dispose of human remains, sacred objects, or funerary material without senior approval and suitable legal, ethical, provenance, and specialist review.
Where an item is suspected to fall within this policy, it must be isolated from normal commercial handling and escalated.
5. Identification & Red Flags
Material may fall within this policy even if it is misdescribed, fragmented, incorporated into an object, or presented as decorative.
- Bones, teeth, hair, mummified material, cremated remains, body parts, anatomical specimens, or objects incorporating human remains
- Grave goods, burial textiles, coffins, reliquaries, funerary masks, ritual vessels, memorial items, sacred regalia, ceremonial objects, or ancestral objects
- Objects linked to indigenous, tribal, religious, colonial, conflict, archaeological, cemetery, burial, temple, shrine, church, mosque, monastery, or sacred-site contexts
- Unclear provenance, source-country restrictions, community claims, colonial acquisition history, illicit excavation, or emotionally sensitive collection history
- Requests for secrecy, rapid sale, unusual shipping, false description, or avoidance of authority or community contact
6. Provenance, Consent & Consultation
Murzo Group will seek evidence of lawful title, provenance, permissions, export status, community context, and ethical custody before any decision involving sensitive material.
Where appropriate, Murzo Group may consult legal advisers, cultural specialists, museums, source communities, religious authorities, embassies, law enforcement, regulators, or source-country bodies.
7. Repatriation & Restitution Claims
Claims or enquiries from source communities, families, indigenous representatives, religious authorities, museums, governments, law enforcement, former owners, or other claimants must be escalated promptly.
Murzo Group may suspend sale, movement, display, photography, testing, or disposal while a claim is assessed. Assessment should consider evidence, law, ethics, cultural significance, dignity, ownership, community standing, provenance gaps, and specialist advice.
8. Storage, Access & Display
Sensitive material must be stored securely, respectfully, and separately from ordinary stock or display items where appropriate.
Access should be limited to authorised people. Public display, photography, digital publication, handling, sampling, or marketing must not occur unless approved after ethical and legal review.
9. Transport, Import & Export
Transport, import, export, or hand-carrying of sensitive material may require licences, permits, customs declarations, cultural property approvals, health controls, human tissue controls, source-country permissions, courier instructions, and insurance approval.
Murzo Group must not move such material across borders until legal status and ethical handling arrangements are confirmed.
10. Records, Review & Responsibilities
Murzo Group will keep secure records of identification, provenance, title, photographs, condition, custody, specialist advice, consultations, claims, decisions, movement, storage, and outcomes.
Directors, cultural property contacts, collection custodians, asset owners, legal contacts, logistics contacts, and authorised representatives are responsible for applying this policy. It will be reviewed periodically and after claims, legal changes, cultural-sector guidance changes, or sensitive-object incidents.
